of you

Written and directed by JT Tsou

Synopsis: Of You is a three hander set in a tidy suburban home. The play explores the complexities of three generations of women navigating their relationships, secrets, and personal struggles. The story opens with Gran, a meticulous matriarch, fussing over her daughter’s plants and offering unsolicited opinions. Her daughter, Mom, arrives home unexpectedly from a work retreat, only to find her own daughter, Daughter, sneaking home from law school with a secret in tow—a pregnancy test. The revelation of the test spirals into a series of witty, tension-filled exchanges as the three women confront their clashing values, unresolved grievances, and generational differences. Gran, ever the traditionalist, dramatizes the situation with hyperbolic flair, lamenting the family’s impending social doom. Mom, caught between her domineering mother and headstrong daughter, juggles wine-fueled exasperation and attempts at damage control. Meanwhile, Daughter asserts her independence, pushing back against outdated notions of womanhood and family expectations. As the play unfolds, buried resentments and unspoken fears bubble to the surface. Gran’s critique of Mom’s parenting sparks revelations about her own failures, while Mom’s frustration with Gran mirrors her struggles to connect with Daughter. Amid the chaos, the characters reveal their vulnerabilities, reflecting on love, responsibility, and the cyclical nature of family dynamics. With a balance of humor and heartache, the play delves into themes of intergenerational conflict, societal pressures, and the evolving roles of women in the modern world. Ultimately, it is a celebration of resilience and the messy, complicated love that binds families together, even when they seem worlds apart.
